Who we are

Engaging, dynamic, and innovative

The ensemble specializes in alternative classical music, new music, and geek chic. A favorite at pop culture conventions, Phoenix Down RPG arranges hundreds of tunes with classically infused flair, performing music from retro through modern video games and nerdy culture. The ensemble has performed and presented panels at Ohayocon, Rathacon, CinCityCon, GDEX, and was a featured guest of Origins/GDEX in 2022. Additionally, Phoenix Down RPG composes and records albums full of tabletop gaming music, including Dragon Ballad Volumes I, II, III, and IV. Our tabletop gaming music tracks have been described as ranging from “quirky hip-hop to foot-dragging zombie-paced dirges and medieval pastiches that recall the work of early 1970s English folk outfit Amazing Blondel.” In January 2019, the ensemble unleashed its latest thrilling performance combining live tabletop gaming with interactive and improvisatory music at conventions and community performances - Campfire Tales.

Phoenix Down RPG challenges the boundaries of Classical Music, bringing music into communities in unconventional settings. Originally rooted in the classical repertoire of Trio d’Anches, the ensemble has won numerous awards and participated in various festivals and conferences including the International Clarinet Association summer conference, the University of Louisville’s New Music Festival, the International Double Reed Society conference, Charlotte New Music Festival, and the International Alliance for Women in Music conference.

Dylan Lloyd, D.M.A

What happens when a classical musician takes aim at combining electronics with klezmer music? You get an intergalactic ax-wielding clarinet and electronic wind warrior Dylan Lloyd. Like Clark Kent he leads a dual identity as an active orchestral musician, but his alter ego embraces his true darker passions, combining his classical music physicality with the lush soundscape of retro game soundtracks and the folklore musical language of klezmer. Dylan uses every musical weapon at his disposal to create and transform klezmer music into a space wonderland. What started as a simple academic pursuit reconnecting with his heritage has pushed Dylan’s artistic energies to create a klezmer genre that is uniquely his, evoking a sense of nostalgia and dance combined with a modern/futuristic aesthetic.
