Electronics, Space Saxophone, and a Clarinet = Klezmertron

Klezmer is a treasured musical tradition of the Jewish people.

So, what happens when one man fuses the musical stylings of klezmer with electronic arts, sound manipulation, and a loop station? You get Klezmertron: a one-man band klezmer-space fusion combining the fundamental elements of klezmer with a new music aesthetic, an amalgamation of old world music forms with new world sounds creating an artform that is truly unique.

My klezmer journey

Dr. Dylan Lloyd has been fascinated with klezmer music since he was a budding new musician. Despite spending much of his academic and musical life being told to concentrate on Beethoven and Mozart, this passion simmered in the background. During his Doctoral studies he decided klezmer was to be the focus of his dissertation, and he jumped full force into researching, learning, and mastering the klezmer art form. By attending Yiddish arts festivals, taking lessons with masters, reading everything he could find on the subject, and listening to as much klezmer as possible, he continues to refine the art and make it his own. Klezmer is the music of his life.

Dr. Dylan Lloyd won second place for the International Clarinet Research Competition in 2021 for his research about Dave Tarras and his klezmer ornamentation.

See his presentation that earned him 2nd place below.

Dr. Dylan Lloyd is currently working on a commission from Burnt Reeds to write a klezmer-inspired piece for Reed Quintet which will be premiered February 4, 2024.
